Ten-Year Replacement: Most smoke alarms are designed to have a lifespan of 10 years from the date of manufacture. Once this is up they should be replaced.
Testing: While batteries should be replaced annually, you should also test your smoke alarm weekly or at least monthly. If the alarm doesn't respond properly when tested, it should be replaced immediately, regardless of its age.
Why Replace? The sensor in a smoke alarm can lose its sensitivity over time, making it less likely to detect smoke.
CO Alarms: If you have a smoke alarm that also detects carbon monoxide, it may have a shorter lifespan, typically 5-7 years, as the CO sensor can degrade more quickly.
